When to Float Artwork

Q. What does it mean to float artwork?

A.  Artwork can be floated within a frame by raising it off of a paper or fabric mat so the edges of the paper are visible and it appears to be floating within the frame.

Floated artwork creates a unique presentation that showcases the piece of art in it’s entirety.  This presentation creates the visual effect of a three dimensional object rather than a flat work of art.  Older paper, special documents or paper with a distinctive edge are perfect candidates for this framing treatment because the paper becomes part of the artwork.
