I chose “Memories of Japan”  by Charles Dwyer to complement this exquisite space. The painting softens the room just enough without taking away from its bold personality. The warm reds and oranges in the piece play beautifully against the deep, saturated color of the walls. The figure’s soft gaze emerges from the rhythmic composition of the painting creating a dramatic focal point.

I chose “Silentium” by Beatriz Simon. This piece, at first glance, is simple and clean but it’s layers and meaning invite contemplation. As your eye takes in the room enveloped in blue, “Silentium” commands your attention with soft shades of white. It is up to the viewer to discover the intricacies of this painting: playful handprints, a touch of gold, subtle pattern and line.

Jefferson Say Gbatu (known as Say) has immersed himself into the world of highly detailed paintings. His perception of the world, or rather the world’s perception toward him, is that of a misplaced object. Say’s work is based on the juxtaposition of contrasting elements.  Aside from being visually appealing, the goal of the work is to question the interaction of the elements within the painting, the advantages and the drawbacks of their union and the new abilities or adaptations that can be brought about from their unlikely contact.

“It’s like adding in life. People today tend to be very individualistic, painting together for us was a very good experience. In our exhibition ”+2″ (plus two) we worked for the idea of recognizing the talent and the qualities of another person. We saw by combining our two artistic abilities, working together, we could make good things happen in life.”

The paintings are tactile – more than just paint on canvas. Mayte Guzman and Beatriz Simón explore themes such as time, change and life through symbolism, shape, texture and color. Both artists convey a synthesis of ideas about the human form and the human experience through abstract motifs.  Simón and Guzman live and work in Mexico City where they often collaborate on paintings in addition to their individual works.

Beatriz Simón

“Stop and amaze yourself by who you really are and by what surrounds you.”

Beatriz Simón whose work combines her interest in self fulfillment and of one’s self search with her very personal mix of techniques and materials. Beatriz Simón works with a variety mediums in order to build her creations and strengthen her personal artistic search. Originally trained as a painter, Simón has now expanded her repertoire to include found object sculpture, photography, plaster sculpture and performance art.

Just as the human being is made up of various elements, so are Simón’s paintings. She mixes mediums, layers and expressive movements in order to create works that are made of very different elements that extracted one from another, would not have the same sense of fullness and finish as the whole piece together.

Matye Guzman

“A key inspiration in my work is the concept of time, in all its aspects. I see time as something devastating but also creative. I like to explore the teachings that time brings, and the traces that it leaves on us, both positive and negative ones. What time takes in beauty and youth, it gives back with experience, knowledge, wisdom…

With my work I want to reproduce the traces left by time. I do this by using different layers of paint, where each layer erases most of what had been produced in the previous one, while also keeping some selected traces. Paint and shapes are added, lost, and then recovered again. I provoke a loss in order to provide a meaning to the recovery.”

Guzman is drawn towards graffiti because it is something that she sees every day. It lives visually in her surroundings and is an expression of life, which she often represents with circular shapes. She uses simple colors and enjoys the strength produced by combining only a few of them. Although she works with a limited color palette, Guzman combines many different textures to create a layered effect.
