Well known for his Populus series, artist Craig Alan first drew inspiration from a balcony overlooking Orange Beach, Alabama where patrons enjoying a wedding party seemed to form the shape of an eye where they stood. From an outside interview with the artist, Craig explains, “Inspiration begins with a ‘What if…’ as I consider alternate imagery, surfaces, effects, results, etc. It comes from the past in conjunction with now. Like a bolt of lightning.” Since this realization, Alan has created a number of works from this “birds’ eye view” lens, painting teeny tiny figures in lines or clusters that when combined with negative space, join together to depict a pattern or often times, iconic symbol or composition. Here in “Art for Everybody,” Alan groups his small figures to make up even larger figures blending together, stylized like American artist and social activist, Keith Haring’s, famous pop art figures. His limited palette of black characters illuminated with white as if touched by light above, set against a deep blue backdrop, establishes a striking sense of drama. The eye is enlightened with the jeweled effect of these figurines like glistening obsidian amidst their sea of blue.
